Do Our Rubber Bands Contain Harmful Chemicals?

This is one of the most common questions we receive — particularly from export buyers, food industry customers and environmentally conscious distributors. The short answer is no — our rubber bands contain no harmful chemicals. Here is the longer, more transparent answer.

What Is in a RuBands Rubber Band?

Every rubber band we make contains:

• Natural Hevea Brasiliensis latex — the primary component
• Sulphur — a natural element used in vulcanisation to create cross-links between polymer chains. Sulphur is the basis of vulcanisation chemistry and has been used safely in rubber manufacturing since the 1840s.
• Natural accelerators — to control the vulcanisation process
• Fluorescent colour compound — in our coloured bands; carefully selected for compatibility and safety
• Anti-oxidant — a natural anti-degradation compound that gives our bands their 3+ year shelf life

What Is NOT in Our Rubber Bands

• No lead or heavy metals
• No harmful plasticisers (e.g. phthalates)
• No synthetic rubber blends
• No chalk, clay or other fillers
• No nitrosamine-producing accelerators
• No petroleum-derived components

Why This Matters for Food Industry Buyers

Several of our customers use our rubber bands in food-adjacent applications — bundling vegetables, wrapping produce, sealing bags. Natural rubber without harmful additives is safe for these applications. Our bands do not transfer harmful substances to food.

This is in contrast to some synthetic rubber bands that may contain plasticisers or other additives that make them unsuitable for food contact.

Why This Matters for Export

Export markets — particularly the USA, EU and Australia — have strict import regulations for rubber products. Biodegradable natural rubber bands are exempt from the anti-dumping duties that apply to synthetic rubber products from India. This is a significant cost advantage for our export customers.

Our clean formulation also means our products can be sold in regulated markets without special certifications or exemptions.
