From stationery to seafood export — rubber bands come in many types. This guide covers every classification: material, size, colour, thickness and application.
The most important distinction. Material determines quality, shelf life, safety and environmental impact.
Made from Hevea brasiliensis tree sap. 700% elongation, 3+ year shelf life, 100% biodegradable, food-safe. The premium choice for any serious application. What RuBands makes.
Made from petroleum-based polymers. Cheaper but significantly lower quality. Not biodegradable.
Size is measured by flat width — the width of the band when laid flat, not stretched.
| Size | Flat Width | Typical Uses | Industries |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 inch | 12.7 mm | Pens, pencils, herbs, grafting | Stationery, Agriculture |
| 1 inch | 25.4 mm | General purpose — most popular size | Office, Garments, Printing |
| 1.5 inch | 38.1 mm | Medium bundles, newspapers | Garments, Media, Postal |
| 2 inch | 50.8 mm | Currency, fabric rolls, files | Banking, Textile, Postal |
| 3 inch | 76.2 mm | Heavy industrial, seafood claw | Seafood, Industrial |
| 4 inch | 101.6 mm | Largest size — heavy strapping | Industrial, Heavy Agricultural |
Colour is primarily for identification and visibility. Fluorescent colours are the most popular in India.
Most popular colour in India. High visibility, used across stationery, garments and produce bundling.
Second most popular. Used where red and yellow are already in use — helps separate categories.
High visibility for warning/caution applications. Popular in industrial and warehousing.
Uncoloured natural latex. Less common in India but used in some food-contact applications.
Rubber bands are classified by material (natural latex vs synthetic nylon), size (flat width 0.5" to 4"+), colour (clear, coloured, fluorescent), thickness (standard vs heavy-duty/sandwich) and application (stationery, industrial, postal, agricultural, seafood).
Natural latex rubber bands offer 700% elongation, 3+ year shelf life, are biodegradable and food-safe. Synthetic nylon bands are cheaper but have lower elongation (~300-400%), shorter shelf life and are not biodegradable.
Fluorescent rubber bands are natural latex bands with fluorescent pigments added during manufacturing. They come in Red, Green and Yellow and are highly visible, making them ideal for produce bundling, garments and any application where easy identification matters.
