Most rubber bands on the market last 12 to 18 months before they become brittle, sticky or start breaking. Our rubber bands last over three years under normal storage conditions. This is not an accident — it is the result of 17 years of formulation refinement.
Why Do Rubber Bands Degrade?
Natural rubber degrades through four main mechanisms:
- Ozone attack — Ozone (O₃) in normal air attacks the double bonds in polyisoprene, causing surface cracking that progresses until the band fails.
- Oxidation — Oxygen slowly oxidises the polymer chains, causing them to become brittle or sticky depending on the formulation.
- UV degradation — Ultraviolet light breaks down rubber polymer chains directly. Even indirect daylight accelerates degradation.
- Thermal aging — Heat accelerates all of the above processes.
The Anti-Oxidation Compound
The key to our extended shelf life is our anti-oxidation compound — a proprietary blend that we have developed and refined since 2008. This compound works by:
- Scavenging free radicals produced by ozone and UV attack before they can damage the polymer chains
- Acting as a physical barrier that migrates to the rubber surface, providing ongoing protection
- Remaining effective for 3+ years under normal storage conditions
The exact formulation is proprietary. What we can say is that it uses no harmful chemicals and is derived from natural sources.
Quality Raw Material Matters
The starting material matters enormously. We use only high-grade, consistently specified natural latex. Impurities and inconsistencies in raw latex accelerate degradation — which is one reason cheaper rubber bands made with lower-grade material fail faster regardless of the anti-oxidant used.
Proper Vulcanisation
Over-vulcanised rubber is brittle. Under-vulcanised rubber is weak. The correct cross-link density — achieved by precise control of vulcanisation time, temperature and sulphur concentration — also affects long-term stability. Our 17 years of manufacturing experience means we have this calibrated precisely.
Why This Matters for Buyers
For distributors: you can hold stock for 3+ years without quality degradation. No rushing to move stock before it expires. Lower write-off risk.
For industrial buyers and packaging houses: consistent performance throughout the year. No surprise failures mid-production.
For export buyers: 3+ year shelf life means your rubber bands arrive in condition and remain usable throughout your distribution cycle.
