You have almost certainly encountered sticky rubber bands — that unpleasant tacky, gummy texture that develops over time. It is one of the clearest signs of rubber degradation. Here is why it happens and how to avoid it.
Why Do Rubber Bands Become Sticky?
Rubber bands become sticky due to a chemical process called reversion — the breakdown of the vulcanised rubber structure back towards its original, uncured state. During reversion:
- The sulphur cross-links between polymer chains break down
- The rubber softens and loses its elastic structure
- Low-molecular-weight degradation products migrate to the surface
- This surface layer feels tacky and sticky
Reversion is accelerated by heat (above 40°C), humidity, and the presence of certain chemicals.
Is It Safe to Use Sticky Rubber Bands?
Sticky rubber bands are near the end of their useful life. They will typically:
- Have reduced elongation — they will break at lower stretch than normal
- Leave residue on the items they are used with
- Fuse together if stored in contact with each other
For most applications, sticky bands should be replaced. They are not safe for food-adjacent use due to potential residue transfer.
Why Don't RuBands Get Sticky?
Our anti-oxidation compound and careful vulcanisation process significantly slow reversion. Combined with the inherent stability of our high-grade natural latex, RuBands maintain their properties — and their non-sticky surface — for 3+ years under correct storage conditions.
The key is also correct storage: keeping bands away from heat above 40°C and direct sunlight is the most important factor in preventing stickiness.
How to Tell If Your Rubber Bands Are Degrading
Signs to watch for:
- Sticky or tacky surface feel
- Visible surface cracking (particularly if bands have been under tension)
- Loss of elasticity — band does not recover fully after stretching
- Discolouration or fading
- Bands fusing together in storage
Any of these signs indicate the band is degraded and should be replaced. Contact us for fresh stock with our full 3+ year shelf life.
